    • Doc Gilcrest walked into the buck house to see Carson on his feet, dresses. "I may not be able to ride, but I can darn sure walk some. Tired of layin' in that bed."   "I reckon you kin do thet, sure 'nough. No body said ya had ta lie there if'n ya didn't want to. Yer stitched up plenty good. Jest leave thet hag leg where she's hangin' fer now, don't need the weight in thet wound."   "So anybody come sniffin' around?" He asked.   "Not so's you'd notice. There's four men down there keepin' watch, but it don't look like Lost Lake's lost any sleep over their man, that is if'n they even know he's gone." Gilcrest offered.   "He seen that breand an' went ta shootin'!" Carson reflected. "I jest shot straighter. Had no choice in the matter. Fool could'a rode on, but, well, that just ain't what happened. hell of a mess."   "Oh I dunno. So far nobodies come huntin', the boss ain't upset over it, neither's Granger, so you got nothin' ta worry on 'cet gettin' better."   "I should'a been more careful, but maybe there just wasn't no way to be more careful. Up on the side of that mountain is the purdiest view a man could look at. You can see fer miles, see right where they got them cows of theirs. Now that ain't gonna be no easy matter to get to any of 'em. They're deep on Lost Lake range. Gonna be hard to get at, an' worse to get out. We'll lose some men tryin' this one, that's for sure!'   Gilcrest rubbed his chin. It wasn't like Carson to go on about the prospects of a job.
    • Just as Speed started for the door with the cash for the Reverend and the School Marm, Phin stepped through that very portal. "Marshal." He greeted.   "Phin. I guess I know why your here. Come in, a bit crowded at the moment, but I believe we can discuss what happened out there today." And a heavy sigh followed his statement.   "Plain enough what happened, one man shot another, simple enough story to pen." Phin rebutted, "It's the details I'm after, the why and what for, you know. Things my readers wish to know about when something like this happens."   "Certainly, well have a seat and I'll tell you what I know." Speed agreed.   "Excellent. Oh, any word from you deputy Pike?"   "I had received a telegram from San Francisco, seems they're on their way to Virginia City in Nevada, then home. He has business there he needs to see too." Speed informed the journalist. "Now, as to today's situation, the man on the boardwalk, recently carted away was one Eethan Noolan, a man of some reputation and wanted for murder in Missoula. Now it appears, according to Mister Cabot Flagg, that Noolan recognized him and went for his gun, Flagg was a bit faster, and the results speak for themselves."   "Flagg? The bouty hunter?" Phin asked.   The same. The bounty was five hundred, I fined him a hundred for discharging a fire arm in town. H declined the rest, which he wanted to go to those in need. I will give half to Reverend Evans, and the remainder to Miss Bowen for the school."   "So you're telling me Turk Flagg donated money to the less fortunate?"   "Yes Phin, I am." Speed stated flatly. "So, there's your story." @Javia
    • "An' just what  would this wire say?" McNue asked, making a safe move.   "Fire. Now was there to be a fire, well. we could lose have the town or better to it." Cook said, "Fire starters don't think past their target, so let's just say that it's decided that the way to delay or end construction of the hospital was to burn the lumber and any work completed, then what happens? A bucket brigade?"   "Hell! I never thought of that." McNue admitted.   "So maybe, since Governor Tom Houser can see his way clear to help get the hospital approved, maybe he can foot the bill foot the bill for a 'pumper' to protect it." Cook mused.   "Maybe." McNue offered, what was the political climate in Helena? How was Houser seen as Territorial Governor, how would supplying a hand pumper to far flung Kalispell sit with the Territorial House and Senate. It would be an expenditure that could raise some eyebrows.   "Yeah, maybe is right, but it sure don't hurt to ask, now does it?" The ever optimistic Cook responded. Ain't got a thing to lose!"
    • We'll be lookin' at maybe two, two and a half hours with stops. It's near fifty one miles end to end, most of it open country, so it'll go pretty fast." He explained. "The time that is. Now, as to this promised walk, wild horses couldn't keep me from that."   The train ride would be much faster because it would be much close than the route they had just taken. There would be stops along the way, Washoe Valley, Carson City, American Flat, and finally, Virginia City herself, but those would be fairly quick ones.   Helping her into the buggy, Barnabas climbed in as sat next to her. "We get to the hotel, I suppose dinner would be in order and then a stroll along the river. Maybe venture into Reno if you like, I'm not sure how rowdy it might be, like I say, I haven't been here in a while, and a lot has changed. I imagine up top is different as well, but, we'll see what we'll see."   The buggy took them to the Lake House where they got off, Barnabas taking the luggage, such as it was, and entering the hotel and securing a ground floor room for the night. @Bongo
    • "It all sounds wonderful."  Smiling, Emeline slipped her hand into his, not particularly concerned with being formal.  "The hotel looks fine, and as long as the bed is soft, I'll be content.  Of course, there is that moonlight stroll you promised me, I'm going to hold you to that!"   While this was likely as rough a town as Kalispell, it still had a quaint feel to it, and a nice walk seemed just the thing after being on the train all day, and along ride tomorrow.   "How long is the trip to Virginia City, anyway?"  She didn't think it was as far as the jaunt they'd taken today, but she wasn't sure, nor if the terrain might make a difference.   @Flip
