  1. Mature Content: One would most sincerely hope not! With: Adelaide Chappel and possibly Isiah Chappel, Porter 'Weedy' James and Joshua 'Josh' Chappel Location: Addy's House When: Early August, 1876 Time of Day: Late Morning Mother wasn't really getting any better. She had thrown herself into the regulation two year period of mourning for her dead husband with gusto, and in reverse proportion to the care he had ever shown toward her when he was alive. Anæsthesia found the atmosphere at home stifling, and she found her mother's hysterical sobbing and wailing and her manic attempts to contact the late Richard Orr through her Spiritualist group wearing on her nerves. At last, after many delaying tactics by Mrs Orr, the daughter of the stricken family had been allowed to 'slight the mourning', to lay aside the crape and the veils and adopt a slightly less stiff and frigid form of dress (dark grey and mauve were allowed now, as well as black) and to leave the house: to finally live again. She prayed that the time that had elapsed had not dulled Addy Chappel's desire to learn to read and write; for it had only increased Anæsthesia's ardour to teach her. Still, excited as she was as she approached the door of the neat little house where the female wagoneer lived, she could not quite quell her nerves. Miss Chappel was older than herself, a grown woman with a fiancé and even an adopted son. Who was she? A mere slip of a girl, only a couple of years out of school: closeted and cozened by her over-indulgent parents and knowing little of the real world other than that which she had read in the pages of magazines like The Young Lady, The Woman's Journal and that awful rogue copy of The Truth Seeker that had been delivered by accident. How silly and girlish she must look with her juvenile features and her blonde locks curled beneath her sombre bonnet as she hurried along, gripping hold of the materials she had produced for their first lesson, clutching them in her tastefully gloved hands like a drowning man might grasp desperately to a lifebelt. She closed her eyes, frogs leaping around in her belly, or so it felt, took a deep breath, and knocked upon the door. @Bongo @MD
  2. Mature Content: No With: Addy, Caroline Location: Swan Lake Stagecoach Station (30 something miles from Kalispell) When: April 1876 Time of Day: Morning Station master Gus Bell smiled as the front door opened and in walked Addy, his latest driver was now present so it was time for the stage to be on it's way. Now Addy was the lone woman who drove for the stage company but despite that supposed disadvantage, the truth was she was one of the most dependable drivers they had and besides, Gus liked her. Well, after he got past the fact she was female. Though a doubter at first, he judged folks by their deeds not words or appearances. "Mornin' ! You got fine weather, that's fer sure. Not a cloud in the sky," he greeted her with a grin. **** Sitting at a long table with benches on both sides were four passengers waiting until their journey could continue. A man, woman, with their two children, a boy and girl neither more than ten or so at first glance at least. All were quite well dressed, they had the look about them of being if not well to do at least of sufficient means. Their eyes went to Addy when she had entered and the adults at least showed a bit of confusion at the words the station master was greeting her with. As if to say 'now who on earth is that?', they obviously had no idea they were looking at their driver for the next stage of their trip, the ride to Kalispell. **** Meanwhile as that little scene played out, there was one other passenger waiting for the ride also but she was outside leaning against the corral fence and seemingly just watching the horses. She too was quite well dressed though in a gaudy fashion with a bright red dress as opposed to the passengers inside in their more somber black and brown outfits. She had her hair up in a sort of bun, revealing earrings. No hat, which women were supposed to wear in public. A closer look would also reveal she wore eyeshadow and lipstick, the sort of thing proper ladies did not. That was for East coast actresses or an even coarser sort of certain immoral women gussied themselves up with. Even her fingernails were painted a bright red. As for her age, hard to tell but most likely late teens to early twenties, she was of average height petite build, not to be considered a classic beauty but pretty enough. As she watched the milling horses, she had a small tin flask in one hand and would occasionally take a small sip from it. She seemed to have no escort, she certainly did not match up with the quartet of passengers inside the station. @Bongo
  3. Whitefish, Blackbird Saloon and Chop House The request had been last minute, and had it not been 'urgent', Addy would likely have told the man at the freight office to just wait until morning to fetch the freight waiting in Whitefish, since the trip there and back would take several hours and it was already past noon. But with the bribe of a little bonus, Addy had agreed to the trip, and in no time she had her team hitched ad was headed out of town. If her timing worked out, she could grab supper at the saloon there while her wagon was being loaded, and she'd be back in Kalispell before dark. Of course, Summer and evening meant the possibility of fighting gnats and mosquitoes, but that was just something you had to contend with. And at least she had company...she'd been stopped by Speed on her way out of town, and the man had asked if he could accompany her, as a means of seeing more of the territory. She hadn't been disappointed...while she was more than happy to travel alone, Speed was an easy companion, fun and interesting to chat with, and the four-hour trip had gone by quickly. Now, as they waited for the wagon to be loaded with Dr. Danforth's equipment, as well as some other sundries that had been waiting for transport, they were at the 'Blackbird Saloon and Chop House', grabbing a quick meal. "Food here's pretty good," Addy commented as they settled at a table, "owner's from England, an' they got things called 'cottage pie' an' 'toad in a hole'." She didn't mention the 'spotted dick! "An' they got excellent steak!" First, though, she'd start with a beer to wash away the heat and road dust. @Speed Guyer
