"Thanks again, Miss Chappel," Jack said, implying tipping his hat by touching the brim of it.  "I'll leave you to your work. Marshal, shall we move on? Perhaps to the town doctor? Or the hotel?"

"Thanks Addy." He turned to Asher, "Doc Danforth's a good man, if she was injured, chances are she was seen by him." He started out. "This way, not far. Maybe we see the livery, that could have been a stop, especially if her horse needed tending or, maybe she traded mounts with him. Just a thought." He was thinking of places in town where this outlaw woman might have gone, or folks she could have dealt with, if she had even been in Kalispell.

Jack nodded. "I've got my horse boarded at the livery stable," he said. "But I'm guessing they'll be more forthcoming if I ask my questions with you there. Which should we hit first? The stable owner or the town doc?"

Jack nodded. "I've got my horse boarded at the livery stable," he said. "But I'm guessing they'll be more forthcoming if I ask my questions with you there. Which should we hit first? The stable owner or the town doc?"

Speed paused and look around. “Hell we’re almost to the Doc’s we can start there, maybe the café across the street, then work our way back to the livery.” Speed responded, rubbing his chin. “Hard to figure what a woman might do, or where she might go. A man, I’d believe that would be much easier.” He gestured forward, Jonah Danforth’s shingle in pain sight.

Phinn looked up, mentally composing his next line when he saw Marshal Guyer with a stranger. Of course, that instantly peaked his interest. It was clear to him Speed wasn’t showing this stranger around casually, perhaps a new deputy?

What would that mean for Hannah Cory? Had she quit? Had Guyer let her go? Had she moved on to something else? Or, was this something else entirely?

Phinias G. McVay was a newspaperman, and he could smell a story a mile off, in a dust storm. This was a story, and he wanted it for the next edition so he leapt to his feet grabbed is coat, his note pad and pencil in the breast pocket, hat already on his head as he bolted from the doorway, pulling the door closed behind him.

He dashed across the street, nearly getting run over by a wagon and dodging two different horses, as he reached the boardwalk just shy of Doc Danforth's office, tipping his hat to two ladies as he pushed past a man.

“Gentlemen. If I might have a word.” he blurted out.

Speed half turned. Hello Phinn.” He greeted with a sigh. “This is Pinkerton Agent Jack Asher. Looking for a particular woman. Jack, Phinias McVay publisher of the Kalispell Union.”

Jack touched the brim of his hat as a greeting to the newspaperman. Jack had seen more than a few people's lives ruined by overzealous reporters writing 'provocative' stories painting people in the worst light, either by twisting facts or simply making things up out of whole cloth, all in the name of selling newspapers. Jack didn't much care for those kinds of reporters. On the other hand, sometimes reporters knew things.

"Mister McVay," he said. "As Marshal Guyer says, I'm here pursuing a few of the remaining members of the Baker gang. They made a name for themselves robbing and killing in Texas, and even got over into Arkansas and Indian Territory, too. These are the ones I believe might be in the area," Jack handed McVay a spare wanted notice with the drawings and names of Freddie 'Flinch' Lynch, Paul 'Smitty' Smith, Charles 'Charlie' Goller, and Dorothy 'Dotty' Parsons, AKA 'Angel'. Charlie's picture had an 'X' through it. "You can keep that one for your publication if you wish. Don't worry about Charlie. I caught up to him and after interviewing him a while, I turned him over to the US Marshal for Montana Territory. Two deputy United States marshals are escorting Charles Goller back to Texas. Of the other three, it's possible Flinch and Smitty are near by, but I've been having better luck following the trail of Miss Parsons. As you can tell, she's young and she's fairly good looking. You can see in the description that she tends to wear trousers and carries a pair of full size Schofield pistols most days, so even up here, she stands out. I can't stop you from printing any of this, Mister McVay, but I would ask that you include a bit about how I feel life gave Miss Parsons a raw deal and that to survive, she made some tough choices, and fell in with a bad crowd and that I'd like to help her if I can. There are others on her trail that likely wouldn't be so congenial."

McVay busily scribbled his notes as Asher spoke, looking up time to time and finally saying, “I’ll be sure to note that about poor choices. So she has not killed anyone, so far as you or the law knows I take it.”Rest assured Agent Asher, this will be front page, and will certainly mention your concerns about Miss Parsons. It’s not often that we have a story such as this, so I am in your debt for this.”

Though Phinn had no love for Pinkerton agents, but in this instance old feelings from the War of Northern Aggression would be put aside to concentrate on the present time and events. “It will appear in this week’s Union, sir.”

"I thank you, Mister McVay," Jack said. He turned to Guyer. "Shall we to our next encounter?"

"Shall we to our next encounter?"

"On to the good doctor then." Speed said. "It really wouldn't surprise me if in fact, she hasn't been seen in town. Not that she may not be here, or have been here, but I'm thinking, perhaps she kept a low profile, only looked to her immediate needs if she knew she were hunted. Then again, I could be wrong, but it is a thought." He stopped at the door of Doc Danforth's office where he knocked. "He should be in."

For the moment Jonah was patient-free, although that didn't mean that he was without work.  Funny, though, as a doctor he'd never quite imagined being a farmer as well, but that was part and parcel of working in the 'wild' west, accepting all manner of critters as payment.  Sometimes he thought it might actually be easier if he wasn't paid at all!  Fortunately, he had a boy called 'Weedy' to help around.  The lad had been suggested by the female stage driver (he hesitated to attach 'lady' to that particular individual), and he had proved to be a hard worker and a fast learner.

It was the boy who answered the door, squinting up at the pair there.  "Hey, Marshal!"  The tow-headed boy looked past the men.  "Is everything all right?"  If the marshal was here, maybe something exciting was going on?

“Hello Weedy, everything is fine.” Speed responded with a smile. He liked the young lad and it seemed he was everywhere. “This is Mister Jack Asher of the Pinkerton Detective Agency, we here to see Jonah and ask a few question if he’s in.”

"Yes, sir!"  The boy grinned enthusiastically, then called out, "Hey!  Doctor Danforth, they want you!"  He looked at the men.  "Come in."  Stepping back, he watched them, determining to stay close by so he could hear everything.

Shaking his head, Jonah headed for the parlor with a bemused grin.  Weedy was a good lad, but sometimes...a boy!

"Gentlemen."  He nodded to his visitors.  "Can I help you?"

"Howdy Doc,  this is Pinkerton Detective Jack Asher. He's on the hunt for a female desperado, and is looking for help locating her." Speed presented the lawman. Glancing at Weedy he winked.
