    • "Thanks fer th' warnin'," Addy chuckled, "I'll try not ta stick my tongue out at them!"   Then she looked back at Caroline and nodded.  "We do got some civilization out in these parts, but it's always good ta have some sorta protection."  One thing that truly riled her was women that weren't taught to defend themselves, or worse, them that were told that they should submit and not fight back.  It was good that Caroline seemed prepared in that way, she'd do fine in Kalispell.   "Go ahead an' climb on up there," Addy told her, then waited by the door, smiling sweetly and nodding to the family as they got in.  Once the door was secured, she clamored up to the box and sat beside Caroline, then gathered the ribbons between her fingers.   "Nice day ta be up top," she commented, "an' you'll get a better view of th' scenery.  If ya get cold, there's a blanket under th' seat.  Them front two lead horses are Hermia an' Helena , an' th' wheelers are Lysander and Demetrius."  She snapped the lines and the coach started moving forward.   @Wayfarer
    • In the Street/Lickskillet, Bridget & (clueless) Jonah, Clara   At least the young woman was willing to be led out of the street, and as Jonah glanced toward the bank he could see one of the law men running up to the front, so it was evident that something was going to happen soon, and they needed to be off the street.    “Where can… where can we go?” she asked.   "We'll just go inside the cafe here, all right?"  He nodded to the door of the closest building, the Lickskillet, just wanting to be clear of the street, and not at all understanding what the girl was asking.  "You're Bridget, right?  I saw you at the dance."    Her limp was making the going painfully slow, but they eventually reached the door and he pushed, not considering that whoever was inside might not be welcoming patrons at the moment...   @Javia; @Wayfarer
    • Back Alley, Wyatt, Weedy, Cole, Jay   Heart pounding, Weedy glanced back at his partner in crime and grinned.  Of course, any chance to get out of school was great, and cow hands shooting up the streets was even better, and it was fun to watch all the folks on the street scrambling to get out of the way.  But to do that, they'd have to get to Main Street.   "Let's go behind the bank, then go up to the street," he suggested as he waited for Wyatt to catch up.  There was still some shooting going on, and a lot of shouting, so maybe this was even more exciting than the usual stuff!    But just as they were starting past the bank, the window shattered and two men jumped out, causing Weedy to skid to a stop.  And as one ran off, the other drew his pistol on the boys.   "Don't you two move or by the Lord Harry I'll kill ya both!"   The man reached out and grabbed Wyatt, who had passed Weedy by a few steps as he stopped, and Weedy was inclined to lash out and kick the guy, but he had a gun, and his friend, so he just stopped...   @Wayfarer; @Flip; @Jack (in that order, I think)
    • The shots could be heard from afar. Jay lived just down the street from the bank, so he heard them inside his small place. Startled by the unusual noise, he reached for his own gun and left the building. It didn't take long for him to see the tipped over wagon near the bank, then the word 'robbery' was carried to his ears. Damn, who on earth would rob the bank here? Instantly he froze, hoping that it wasn't his old gang, who had returned to pay the good people here a visit (and him). He knew very well he should turn around and walk away, if there was a robbery in progress. After all his life here was on shaky legs.   But then he saw Weedy and another kid head up the back alley towards the bank. "Weedy!" He shouted after the boys but they had already rounded the corner and were gone. "Damnit!" Knowing how much Addy loved the  boy, he felt he had to follow him and make sure he stayed away from trouble and wasn't guided by his curiosity. So he followed the boys towards the back alley, trying to get their attention but they were too far ahead.
    • Her hand was there before he could question anything that was going on and Jay found himself reaching for it and shaking it firmly. Perhaps it was the relief of not having to sleep with her or the relief, that one day, if all went well, he might actually be sleeping with the right kind of woman. And he already had a good idea, who that might be.   The liquor from her pocket was another surprise, but a welcome one. Reaching for it he nodded towards her. "Thank you." Took a good long swig to calm himself down a little. The home made stuff burnt down his throat like fire and made him cough a little. "Holy smokes, that tastes like...wonderful." He had another smaller sip. No need to anger the woman, who had him by the balls now.   He made a mental note of the information about the land because he would have to do some research on that. "I always bring my gun...but as you know. Use it too seldom, unlike you." That little jab was necessary. Then he briefly listed his shirt to show her the scar that her bullet had left. "You got me." Maybe a little bad conscience would help his case.

After the initial bow and curtsy (combined with an excited wave in Clara's direction) Arabella had expected the dance to be hard work. Fun, but hard work. However, although she had to direct Brendan a good deal of the time – during some of the more complicated passages she could be heard murmuring instructions like “In, in, in, and out, out, out, and round and round and JIG!” – he had such an intuitive feeling for the directions she was pulling in him, an observer would have found it hard to tell that he wasn’t leading.

When they came in for the first boomps-a-daisy, he even rebelled from her tutelage and pulled them up short.

“Hey!” she objected.

"You still wanna use your elbows on Clara?" he asked Arabella teasingly, hoping the answer would be no.

“I wanted to bump our bustles!” she corrected.

She didn’t actually have a bustle herself, but Clara’s was more than ample. She thought it would be fun to bump backsides when they met in the middle, although it was unlikely in the extreme that the Redmond girl would appreciate such a deviation from the accepted steps. Arabella was a full 100 years ahead of her time.

As the two couples neared, he decided not to ignore Clara anymore - he had made a point to look in the opposite direction whenever they had happened to be looking at each other - and so he flashed her a smirk that said "Havin' fun? I am."

“Whoa Cowboy!” frowned Arabella in mock indignation “You’re meant to be smiling at me not … in again, in, in, in, out, out, out … not a-grinnin at the opposition!! Two more o’ these, then the jig!

She had to combine reminding him that he was her partner for the next four minutes, with telling him what came next.

But the part where they did a little jig facing each other was so funny, she couldn’t help laughing out loud. There was something so naturally graceful and unrestrained about Brendan, he was like the wild and free horses and cattle he worked with every day and the dance floor was like a wide open prairie they trailed. He looked like he was enjoying himself, and that made her enjoy herself too, she could have stood jigging back and forth with him like this forever and a day.

Present: Arabella, Brendan, Charlie, Clara on the dance floor

As the two couples neared, Brendan decided not to ignore Clara anymore - he had made a point to look in the opposite direction whenever they had happened to be looking at each other - and so he flashed her a smirk that said "Havin' fun? I am."

Clara had been more concerned with not colliding with the other couple in their pursuit of the required dance step so did not expect Brendan to speak up to her.

"Yes, I am, very much so!" she hastily replied before Arabella took the young man away again in the opposite direction, well after all that was the expected move to make for this dance.

Then it was back to threading between couples before yet another lively jig,  she faced Charlie,"I hope you are too, Charlie."

Surely the young man was not going to make this into yet another matter of contention.

Jay Addy and Mike

Jay took note that he just met the foreman of a farm, which could be a good contact to have.

"I'm a blacksmith." He added on to Addy's explanation about possibly hiring him for help.

"But I do general handy work, too."

Despite the fact that he did not officially ask Addy whether she wanted to be more than just a a friend, he somehow felt a little odd when Mike asked her to dance. Was he jealous? Because of a dance? And if so...why? His gaze darkened a little when he tried to figure out what on earth was going on.

Yet he didn't want to be impolite, so he added. "Go ahead. Maybe the next dance will suit you both. I'll quickly find the outhouse."

He handed Addy his drink. "Would you hold that for a moment...just set it down over there when you go dance."

His fingers brushed against hers and for a second their eyes connected before he left.

"It's my good fortune, then, that he had the foresight to bring you here."  He smiled, but then shook his head.  "Detractors, still?  "I'd have hoped that they would have given up by now.  I'm sure they haven't counted on your tenacity."

“Tenacity is one thing, garnering support for the hospital, and the orphanage, may be a bit more than I had anticipated.” The she smiled. “However, it’s a simple land swap, and the construction and labor costs will affect the community not at all. That will be handled privately, and not out of the local bank. Oh, I still have my account there, but not as it was before Croft left and this Charles Wentworth bought his way in. I don’t trust him.

Slowly, he strolled with her toward the dance floor, although he intended to wait until the Gallop was done before stepping out.  "The Ladies Society...smart.  They may not have a direct say, or a vote, but they have husbands who want to keep them happy."

“It is a great opportunity to tell the ladies what the plans are, how it will affect the town, and that it was not conceived, nor was it arranged by anyone on the Town Council, which is what I believe their plan to be.” She paused s if to catch her breath. “I’m sorry, I am just ready to fight them for what they owe the town, and that has nothing to do with who arranged what or when.”

Then she pointed at Pronto, as if to say ‘Can he join in too, please?’ She liked his beardy face and kindly manner toward her.

Pronto smiled, “I’m afraid I’m all thumbs when it come to bakin’ most anything. Heck My biscuits come out so hard was I to throw one, it’d knock out a grown man. But I’d be delighted to sample what you ladies were to bake.”

Charlie, Clara, Arabella and Brendan

Then it was back to threading between couples before yet another lively jig,  she faced Charlie, "I hope you are too, Charlie."

Charlie frowned slightly.  He was beginning to have fun until that fellow spoke to Clara.  A feeling had swept over him and it summed it up to being a little protective of Clara in a big brother sort of way.  Sure, they had their differences but he considered her a friend and he wasn't sure what to do about it.  Having made a mess of at the start of the dance, he didn't want to upset Clara any more tonight.

Smiling, he nodded, "Yes, I am having fun."

As the dance progressed, he continued to keep an eye on this jasper but found it had to do so because of the intricacies of the dance.  One thing he knew for certain was that he would find out more about the man before the evening was over.

"Oh right!," now Wyatt got it then heard the rest of it before smiling, "Hey, that might be fun. Clara would never let me sleep in the barn at home. But yeah, if Pa is in a good mood, he might say I can stay in town for tonight. You ask Addy and I can ask Pa."

"Sure!"  Weedy grinned, he'd never had company for the night...well, he'd never thought of it, really, except for Jay, and he wasn't exactly company, and he had his own place now.  "I don't sleep in the loft very often, mostly in the Summer," he explained, but, of course, it was far too cold during the Winter, and most of Fall and Spring.

"Jay tried sleeping out there, but it was too cold.  He's from England, that's why he talks so funny, and of course he needed a ship to get here."  Weedy glanced at Wyatt.  "We should ask him what it was like, being on a ship like that...just water around you."  That would actually be a little disconcerting, having nowhere to go if something happened to the ship.

Wellington MacKenzie moved along the edge of the dance floor. He had gotten himself a glass of punch and tried to stay back from the swirling couples. He had been waylaid a few times by the more political minded townspeople. Various city council types and a man he thought had been the mayor. Each had greeted him and then began bending his ear about how thrilled they were to have an actual military garrison in the area.

MacKenzie had been happy at first to have the attention but soon it had grown tedious as he had to keep explaining he only had so much latitude in his activities in this area. Finally he had found a quiet spot beside a table and was finishing his glass of punch when he saw Matilda moving away from the dance floor. MacKenzie also noted she was no longer accompanied by the doctor. MacKenzie drained his glass and set it down before he moved on an intercept course.

He finally caught up to Matilda and fell into step beside her. "Did your escort abandon you?"

Brendan, Arabella (and Charlie and Clara)

"Yes, I am, very much so!"

Clara and the other man were off away from them again. Brendan grinned at Clara's flustered reply to him and at Arabella's mock indignation.

Whoa Cowboy! You’re meant to be smiling at me not … in again, in, in, in, out, out, out … not a-grinnin at the opposition!! Two more o’ these, then the jig!

"Sorry," he said as they moved through the motions of the dance, "but she ain't the opposition, really. Here..." He smiled down at her. "There...happy now? Ooop..."

They moved into the jig and he almost started going the wrong way, but stopped in time because he was watching Arabella's eyes. He could tell a lot about an animal from its eyes, but when it came to people's eyes he couldn't tell much except which direction the person was looking in. During a dance, that was quite helpful.

The dance was not as scary as Arabella had made it out to be, and now that he had gotten the hang of it, he didn't really want it to be over - even though he would be out of breath and ready for a rest by the time the musicians stopped. He needed to make a visit to the beer tent soon.

He glanced over at Clara and her partner again and met the eyes of the man she was dancing with - just for a second before both couples turned and he was looking back at Arabella. Why was the man watching him? It wasn't as if he had insulted Clara or anything.

But this was a party, a time to have a good time and set that sort of thing aside.  "Tell me, just how modern is Helena?  In comparison to, say, St. Louis?  I wouldn't mind getting away for a day or two, maybe see a play or an opera."

"There you have it!" Emeline declared with a laugh, "Bridget will help with the cooking, and Barnabas can try our efforts to make certain that they are as good as they should be."  Then she added with a playful grin, "And Mr. Pike can do the dishes as well, he's quite the expert at that!"

She laughed again and gave Barnabas a quick kiss on the cheek.  "Or you can just make certain that we behave ourselves and don't burn down the kitchen!"

Then she patted Bridget on the arm.  "Don't worry one bit, we will have fun, we won't do any harm, and we can make whatever you like...well, so long as I know the recipe!"

Bridget opened her mouth in amazement at this (she was pretty easily amazed, though, it had to be admitted). With his shiny badge and all, she expected he must be an important man; certainly too important for doing the dirty old dishes.

She laughed again and gave Barnabas a quick kiss on the cheek.  "Or you can just make certain that we behave ourselves and don't burn down the kitchen!"

The ginger girl giggled and hid her mouth, seeing them kiss and carry on like this. It was nice, though. Not like when that man tried to kiss her in Deadwood, not that bad kind of kissing. The dark cloud of a life before this pleasant move to Kalispell must have suddenly crossed her face.

Then she patted Bridget on the arm.  "Don't worry one bit, we will have fun, we won't do any harm, and we can make whatever you like...well, so long as I know the recipe!"

Bridget immediately brightened and remembered that Arabella was always going on about never being able to get something called ‘bear sign’ in these parts, and the way she had described the thing made it sound like a virtual manna from heaven.

She held up a finger and moved it in a circular, donut shaped motion.

“Want Bear Sign… make Bear Sign.” she intimated to Em.

Suddenly, she saw Mr Ryker heading in their direction, and she started to wave furiously at him, hoping to catch his eye: he looked like he was heading somewhere to attend to some seriously big business, so she hoped to catch him before he stomped past.

She kept waving at him, but risked a side-whisper of explanation to Pronto.

“He mended me.”

Brendan, Arabella (and Charlie and Clara)

"Sorry," he said as they moved through the motions of the dance, "but she ain't the opposition, really. Here..." He smiled down at her. "There...happy now? Ooop..."

Brendan might not be able to tell much from people’s eyes, but Arabella could, and the way the man from Mississippi kept glancing over to Clara (or to Charlie perhaps, in a way it amounted to the same thing) told her something.

When the jigging and giggling part was over, they moved into another straight polka round in circles and Arabella was able to get to work on the earthy nature boy.

“How d’ya like my friend Bridget?” she asked “Nice ain’t she?”

“… an’ you know what they say about redheads!” she threw that into the pot as well.

She wasn’t sure herself what exactly ‘they’ said about redheads, but hoped it was more fuel to pique his interest. Somewhere in the back of her butterfly brain, something tugged at her conscience: why was she pressing the suit of the strange, almost ethereal crippled girl over her alleged ‘bosom friend’? The thought appeared and died again like a mayfly in Spring, but it would flutter into her heart again in time.

They danced around some more and Arabella tipped him the wink.

“All right, this is the walky part!” she explained “Just ignore them!” she heard herself adding, and almost jumped with surprise at the sound of her own voice, terse and didactic. “I mean, let’s pretend to be snooty!” she said with more fun in her voice, saving the mood, and the actress in her managed to pull a funny nose-in-the-air face as they turned and paced toward Clara and Charlie walking at them the other way.

"All the more reason to get to the ladies early," Jonah commented, "so they know where the ideas are coming from, and are in the groundwork, so they feel like they have a stake in things."

“Exactly Jonah! Pull them in to this like the partners they are, make them understand this was not some man’s idea, nor a woman’s for that matter. It was us, together, last winter, you and I, and then came Doc Boon to join in. It’s not Saint Steelgrave’s Hospital, it’s Kalispell Hospital.” She paused and took a sip of punch for more reasons than one. He voice had risen.

“Helena? Why Helena’s no Saint Louis, or Baltimore, or New York.  On it’s way though. Montana’s a bit behind, but it’s got it’s comforts, it’s opera house, and fine dining. Might be dirt streets still and a great deal false fronts like we have right here.” She smiled then. “But it’s there, and we’re here, so point taken. She paused again, setting down the cup. “Wait for a stage, as unreliable as they can be, or hire a carriage?” She took a sip looking over the rim of the cup at him. “Perhaps a day to think on it?”

Smiling, Charlie nodded, "Yes, I am having fun."

Well there ya go! No issues at last, Clara was pleased, she was getting all she had really wanted out of this dance - a chance to dance with a boy. Actually she hoped to dance with more than one before the night was over but you had to start someplace.

"You actually are a smooth dancer, Charlie," she complimented him sincerely.

Soon the dance devolved into the next part where the individuals had to separate once more, then thread past each other as they faced their other partners, in other words Arabella and Brendan. A glance at the orphan girl and she was looking all serious even snooty so Clara did not bother but instead caught Brendan's eye, giving a clear enough nod of acknowledgement. And then they were past each other again.

The dance was almost over now, a pity, it had been actually quite exhilarating!

Present:  Col. Mackenzie, Matilda

"Did your escort abandon you?"

There he was, the dashing colonel in his fine uniform. Matilda smiled but shook her head in the negative.

"No he did not. The good doctor had requested a dance with me, I had agreed, we danced, and now the dance is finished," she explained the obvious.

Glancing around, she spotted Danforth, "Looks like he is in the process of asking someone else to dance. Pretty much how a dance like this is supposed to operate you know?"

"Now as for me, I am a woman of my word, and I also promised you a dance. Shall we do just that when the next one starts?" she figured that was what he was leading up to anyhow.

The current dance was well along and given it's nature jumping into it in the middle was not practical, unlike a simple waltz. They could chat though until the next one.

"So did you go to West Point, colonel? I would imagine teaching our military leaders how to dance would have been high in priority at such an illustrious institution?"  she grinned.

"I hadn't really thought about that," Jonah answered, "although I suppose a buggy would be more comfortable, relatively."  Neither vehicle was luxury, but at least in a buggy you weren't crammed in with strangers and no one would fall asleep on your shoulder!

"But I suppose, too, it depends on how long it takes to get there, and if there are suitable towns or way-stations along the way, and that I would defer to you, since you've been there."

He hadn't actually planned on going, but now that he was talking about it, it was sounding more interesting, especially if Leah might accompany him.

"What would you suggest?"

On his way to the bathroom he saw someone waving their arms out of the corner of his eye, so he looked up to see what was going on. Apparently the generous wave was directed at him. For a moment he wondered why the girl was trying to get his attention. Did he know her?

Then he suddenly recognized her as the bed ridden strange young lady with only one leg, who had been so dramatic. She looked very different now in a nice dress and standing upright.

Jay offered her a smile and tipped his head, then he noticed she was headed his way. Was he rude enough to say he didn't have time?

Not really, so he waited for her and said. "I see that leg is coming along alright. Are you enjoying your evening?"

Brendan and Arabella

As Brendan and Arabella continued to polka, she asked him what he thought of Bridget. Brendan, caught off guard by her question, had to think about that for a minute. What did he think of Bridget? And what did they say about redheads? None of it was very complimentary.

"Yeah, she's nice. Good at waltzin'." He realized as he was saying it that Bridget was more than nice. She was sweet and innocent, and there was something about her that made him treat her differently than he would treat other girls. The redhead had wakened some of the big-brotherly feelings that had been dormant since he left home, but she had also stirred some other part of him, and he wasn't sure how those two feelings could exist at the same time.

When they got to the "walky part," Arabella had another idea. "Just ignore them! I mean, let’s pretend to be snooty!”

"Good idea." He grinned before adopting a haughty expression, jutting his chin out and puffing up his chest as they neared their opposite couple. But he couldn't keep from glancing at Clara to see how she reacted to their snootiness, which spoiled the act a little bit. She nodded at him and he arched one eyebrow, trying to maintain a reasonable amount of snootiness.

"She could give us lessons on bein' snooty," he whispered to Arabella, breaking out into a grin before putting on his haughty expression again.

Bridget seemed to be distracted, though, and whispered something to Barnabas, then moved away from them toward Jay.  "What did she say to you?" she asked, "she seems to know him, maybe he'll convince her to dance?"  He was a fine young man, she'd known that when he'd helped them rescue old Mrs. Anderson in Whitefish, even though he'd been injured himself, and besides, Addy liked him, and she was an excellent judge of character.  "Goodness, I fret so much over a stranger, I pity our children!"

A few minutes later and it was over.  Charlie let one hand drop and while he held the other, he took one step backwards and then bowed.  Standing upright, he smiled, "Thank you for being such a wonderful partner."

While he waited for Clara's response, he could see Arabella and her partner approach them.  Now he would find out who this jasper was and why he was so interested in Clara.

Bridget usually found being unable to communicate rapidly and with any sort of precision very frustrating, but this time her attempt to make a donut shape with her fingers and pretend to bite into it and lick her lips was so lame, she couldn’t help but laugh at herself, as did Miss Em’s offer to have the currently slim Mr Pike taste test everything. She wondered just how fat he would be after a year of marriage to the pie-mistress of the town.

Then she saw Jay and rushed across to him.

When she had broken the leg during Polka practice with Arabella, it was as if she had immediately been plunged back into an old life of pain and misery, dressed in rags, hopping around on a crude crutch on one leg, begging for a pittance and even having to hand that pittance over to the man who virtually owned her.

It was a dark feeling, and it had plunged her to not only mental despair, but had heralded more frequent and worse attacks of the phantom limb agony that periodically afflicted her.  Jay had fixed that, and it was thanks to him that she was here tonight, suffering from her painful first crush on Brendan and stuffing her face with cookies and making new friends, just like any ‘normal’ young woman.

It was no surprise then, at least to her, when she threw her arms around the Englishman for the longest time, and managed to stammer into his ear. “I like it … thank you for … for fixing me.”

She finally released him and grabbed his hand and dragged him over to the pie table. Where Emeline had been watching the two of them with interest.

Introductions were in order. She’d already pointed Jay out to Pronto as the man who “Mended” her, but introductions were due the other way, and Bridget summoned all her courage and practice with the Chinaman Fa to say them out loud, perfunctory as they were.

Mrs Blakesley was introduced, when she could eventually get the words out, as “M… Miss Em” and Pronto was just  “… Pike!” Which might have sounded a little short and rude, but the big smile on her face as she introduced them illustrated the great affection she already felt for the affianced pair.

"Yeah, she's nice. Good at waltzin'."

“Well course she is, I taught her!” replied Arabella with her usual air of showing off, but with enough of a glint in her eye to indicate that even she took her own boasting with more than a pinch of salt.

When they got to the "walky part," Arabella had another idea. "Just ignore them! I mean, let’s pretend to be snooty!”

"Good idea." He grinned before adopting a haughty expression, jutting his chin out and puffing up his chest as they neared their opposite couple.

Arabella was impressed by Brendan’s snooty act and it tickled her so much that she could barely keep her side of it up. But then, oh dear: there he was peekin’ again! Nobody likes to be second best, but she hid her jealousy under a lie to herself that she was concerned about Bridget’s chances with the handsome young cowboy.

"She could give us lessons on bein' snooty," he whispered to Arabella, breaking out into a grin before putting on his haughty expression again.

“Oh, I know!” agreed Arabella, feeling a slight pang of guilt at bad mouthing the girl whom she had always declared to be her ‘bosom friend’ (one-sided arrangement though that was!).

“Not like Bridget Monahan, she’s just the sweetest natured person this side of heaven. Ooh, and I just thought, she’s got an Irish name, just like you! Say, I don’t suppose you happen to be a Catholic do you?” she asked with a double purpose: one, they needed an escort to take the pair of them up to Father Ignatius’ Catholic Mission house the next day, and two, for the little matchmaker to find any points of similarity between the ranch hand and the crippled girl.

Once the dance had finished, Arabella tried to steer Brendan back to the pie table and to Bridget, but the way they were placed, there were Clara and Charlie in between, the former looking … no! … was that almost happy?!

As for Charlie though, he was staring at Brendan with a curious look that Arabella couldn’t totally fathom, but made her tummy jump up and down in foreboding and the hairs on the back of her neck stand up to attention, like soldiers on a parade ground.

"Bear sign?" Emeline mused, "I'm not certain what that is...I've heard of bear claws."  She shrugged and smiled.  "Well, we'll just have to ask, and then see what we can come up with!"  Then she laughed and playfully nudged Barnabas.  "And we have a skilled, brave taster to let us know if what we make is good."

“Yes ‘em, and I can do that, quite well in fact.” He replied. “I’ve had my share of bear sign I have. Cowboys get word of it, you'll have trouble keepin' it on hand!"

“Her? Somethin’ about bear sign an’ me bein’ the judge of what was baked. Why?” He asked, then added, “Bein’ fretful about strangers ain’t necessarily a bad thing, Em. Good instincts like you got about folks is good defense most times.”

Introductions were in order. She’d already pointed Jay out to Pronto as the man who “Mended” her, but introductions were due the other way, and Bridget summoned all her courage and practice with the Chinaman Fa to say them out loud, perfunctory as they were.

“Howdy.” Pronto said extending his hand to the young man. "Barnabas ‘er Pronto which ever comes to mind first.”
