What comes next in the Saga of the Bear? Put on your dancing shoes!

The last event on the agenda for the Founder's Day Celebration is the open air dance. This will take place on the fairgrounds. A bandstand and dance floor has been constructed, a large tent set up for a buffet style meal, and of course, there are a few beer barrels and water barrels too.

We'd like to do the dance thread similar to the brawl, some individual post replies, some JPs, etc. However, if anyone wants to start up their own thread, that's fine too. It does not all have to be in one.

For dance scenes, use the following date: Evening, Saturday, July 31, 1875

If you have ideas for new scenes, feel free to start them. We'll try to keep the dating system for upcoming threads more fluid. Everyone will need to watch for bear events written by each other so we all know what has happened and what hasn't.

I will add a bear thread tag to be used in conjunction with the others (open tags, closed tags, etc.) to flag posts as bear-related posts.

Best wishes and have fun!

I know we all still have a few posts to do in the main dance thread and in the side threads. However, let's start looking at winding them down. Don't short change yourselves, you can keep posting even after we move on - just recommending we begin the wind down on those scenes.

Good Day All,

Here's a bit of a timeline update on our main episode plot - scenes marked with [EP] indicate direct bear involvement.

[EP] Bear-Ly There

Date: Tuesday, August 3

[EP] Tracks

Date: Wednesday, August 4

The goal is to tell the story of the marauding bear and, at the same time, weave character stories in with it so that no one is left waiting too long for story posts. We do not have a hardcore set timeframe that you can write in. In general, keep the [EP] marked events in mind as you plan scenes. You need to have an idea of what your character could realistically know, might know, or should know regarding a marauding bear wreaking havoc in the area. Also, bear encounters are not limited to certain characters. If you have a good bear plot scene, add it to the plot requests forum here or in Discord.

How do I know what date to use on my scenes?

This is a hard one to answer. Think about the likely speed of gossip and news in that era and do your best to plan accordingly regarding how clued in on local events your character would be.

So far, the bear has not killed anyone, only livestock. There are going to be some human fatalities and injuries. Dr. Danforth will have his work cut out for him!

Feel free to update this thread with questions and suggestions! This is a collaborative writing site so everyone can join in the plotting and planning!

This first thing should go in the Announcements forum, but I am feeling lazy...

We have officially converted to not setting an actual date on scenes. I will get get a weather graphic up tomorrow and update the season/weather information. For now, we're in the early part of August (just after the 1st). Remember, we're now event-driven not date-driven so everyone needs to stay up-to-date with what's happening. The Recent Posts tab on the character profiles tells you their recent activity unless it was in a JP, then you need to drop into Discord and check the #tags channel for updates.

Do not have your character aware of an event unless the scene has been completed and locked!

Part 2: Y'all need to lock your scenes when you finish them.

Due to all the time I've spent converting us to the Character Mod, we have not moved forward in awhile. I'm going to catch up on tags tomorrow (everywhere), then I need to get some guides done up for this site. After that, I'll try to put up some plot requests or open invitation scenes for people to jump into. Meanwhile, don't forget, if you want plots, can post what you're looking for in our Plot Requests forum. It will feed right to Discord so people can jump on it!

Shout out and Thank You to @Bongo who set the topic title trend of having the word Bear in titles that concern an attack by Old Satan. I have followed suit and renamed my scene to Bear Tracks and the upcoming one will be Bear Chase. So, if you all can, work the word bear into your titles when the scene involves anything about Old Satan, the killer bear.

Remember! We no longer have to figure out and add specific days/dates to our scenes. See my update on time management in the Announcements forum. Also, as I find them, I will update our plotting and planning guidelines.

Here's a reminder!

You no longer have to wait for one scene to finish to start a new one. You also do not have to wait on bear related scenes to finish to open your own, you simply have to wait for in-progress scenes to be completed before your character can know anything about what happened. We are running on the assumption that events are occurring at different times during a day or on different days. Just make sure your character is not working off of OOC knowledge and you're golden!

Clara and Shade are about to be bear chased!

Hannah, Matt, and Longshot are discussing the bear!

Harriet is enjoying her Sunday picnic with Jonah! Thank you @Bongo !  @Longshot Quentin has competition :riding:

@Flip is doing some awesome scene-setting narrative posts! Everyone should feel free to do these types  of posts too! :smoking: Flip has promised us more trouble!

Thank you, @JulieS for our new emoticons! Everyone, they are listed under Western Folks in our emoticon dropdown (points at smiley face in editor menu). However, please only use emoji in OOC Posts or OOC statements at the bottom of your IC post.

I have added new emoji to the Likes buttons at the bottom of each post. Fee free to use these as ways to congratulate and give kudos to your writing partners! It will make them smile!

We'll do our best to have the bear attack an NPC soon!

Just a short update on where we stand ....

We have some freestanding subplots that need completed. However, they are moving along well so that's not an issue at all!

Plot Points for The Bear....

  • Assume there is a gradual increase in attacks on livestock being reported.
  • Although it has not yet been done - a bounty will be put on the bear.
  • We will call for 'characters' to be included in the final hunt. Shade (my main character) will be on the hunt but will not kill the bear. I need him to be mildly injured for the opening of the next episode. We can roll the dice in Discord or something to determine who gets the kill shot.

So, continue with your subplots. I will give you plenty of notice before we open the next episode.

Hey Y'all!

I've been meaning to do this for two weeks now, so my apologies.

I think it's time we plan out the bear hunt so we can put this episode to bed and focus on other plots for awhile.

I need for each of you to let me know if you want involved in the Lost Lake bear hunt (where it will be found and killed)...

  • No more than one character for each of us.
  • Shade will, of course, be on the hunt. I need for him to be injured - perhaps in the final showdown with Ole Satan. Not as seriously as Ezra, just enough to keep him from making the cattle drive. Was planning on having his leg clawed or bitten. Maybe get smacked and wind up with a concussion.
  • You all need to decide who actually kills Ole Satan. I don't want it to be Shade.

  • Liked your post, Pard! 1

I suppose they will all be meeting up somewhere to gather for the hunt.  If it is in town, I can have Matt Wentworth there but not going on the hunt for some reason.

Continued from And Soon They Meet.

@Players  @JulieS

So, I thought I'd kill a few stones with one thread. B|

I am going to start an open thread with Shade in town getting supplies for the bear hunt on Lost Lake Ranch. Timewise, this is within two or three days of Ezra being attacked and seriously injured. I figured he could run into Katherine and maybe a couple of other characters that will be going on the hunt with him and Quentin.

If there turns out to be multiple conversations happening in the thread, I am going to strongly recommend that we joint post them rather than play-by-post so that we're not tripping over one another. It'll be easy to track if everyone will manually add their tags to the Discord's tags channel.

To get the link to a specific post in the thread, go to the top of the post after you've completed your edit, click on the little share icon ( < ), copy the link and paste it into the tags channel on Discord. It's easy!

Are we still doing the thread we talked about with Shade showing up at the farm to see Aurelian?

Sure. I'll try to get tags caught up so new threads can be started. It'll be a little later today.

As of right now, I only have two threads planned to finish up The Bear. The first one will start with Shade stopping by the Redmond farm and chatting with Aurelian who will want to join the hunt. He will then head into town. Those that want into this thread, please let me know and we can progress the thread through various encounters.

The second thread will be The Hunt which ends with finding and killing Mr. Bear. I've set things up for a smooth transition to the next stories.

I have archived all completed threads in the 1875 Archives found here... If I moved any incomplete threads, please let me know and I'll move them back. Since I did not get responses to previous requests for locking completed threads so I'd know, I made my best guesstimate based on reply dates. Happy to move them back though. Just let me know which ones.

OK - Characters that will be participating are...

  • Addy
  • Aurelian
  • Quentin
  • Shade
  • Speed

But, only four characters are eligible to kill the bear. When the bear attacks our camp, Shade will be injured (not horrifically, deep claw gash on his leg and a mild concussion - enough to keep him from doing the short trail drive).

To try and avoid confusion with all of us in one thread...

  • Direct conversations between two characters will be JP'd.
  • Please tag ONLY the player you want to respond in your posts. Do not tag all of us. Hopefully, this lets one person respond so there's not so much leapfrogging over everyone to post.

When the final bear hunt thread is posted, I will roll dice in our Discord to determine who gets the final kill shot. How the kill happens is up to the writer. What happens to and with the other characters is up to the writers. For example: Shade does not have to be the only one injured in the final confrontation. I just need him with a logical reason not to go on the cattle drive so he can be home to interview new foreman (Matt Wentworth's brother). Also, Quentin and Harriet get a humorous thread.

I'll copy and post the dice roll here when it happens.

I am rolling to see who gets the final kill shot on the bear. This does not mean no one else gets to shoot.... y'all get to write out how you get to the final shot.

Below are how I've weighted the characters....

Addy: 1, 2
Aurelian: 3, 4
Quentin: 5, 6
Speed: 7, 8

d!roll d4 2
Stormie's Evil Twin BOTToday at 11:00 AM

@Stormwolfe You rolled 1, 2

OK, @Bongo Addy won the dice roll. She gets the final kill-shot. That means she'll need to have one of the heavier rifles that has been brought along or one of the pistols converted to shoot a 45-70 round (and be really close to the bear).

If Bongo decides to defer Addy getting the shot, then it will go to the next in line and so on (see the weighted list and go alphabetically).

The signal for starting the action will be when the bear attacks and Shade is injured. We don't have to write out the entire camp, trip back, etc. unless you all want to. Let me know and we'll get started winding this plot up!
